The Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday registered a landslide victory in the February 12 civil poll in West Bengal, won the four city companies. BJP, which emerged as the main opposition party in the assembly poll last year, has been pushed to third in terms of votes while the left is expiring as a distant second.

In the four civilian bodies – asansol, biddhannagar, Chandannagar and Siliguri – combined, TMC received 61 percent of the votes while BJP received 14.5 percent of voting shares. The left left, which failed to win a single seat in the assembly poll last year, fate better by getting a voice share of 16.75 percent. Congress managed to get only 3.5 percent of the sound share.

In Asansol, TMC won 91 wards from 106 while BJP got seven wards. Congress and each bagged three and two wards. In Biddhannagar, TMC won 39 wards from 41 during Congress and an independent candidate won each one. Former Biddhannagar Mayor of Sabyasachi Dutta, who returned to TMC last year after failing to conduct an assembly poll with BJP tickets, winning the election.

At Chandannagar, TMC won 31 of the 32 wards while left front got a ward.

In Siliguri, TMC won 37 out of 4 years while BJP, front left and Congress each won five, four and one ward. Mayor of Siliguri and Senior CPM leader Ashok Bhattacharjee and BJP Mla Shankar Ghosh lost elections. Former Minister of North Bengal Gautam Deb who lost polls 2021, won the election

The TMC head announced that Deb would be Mayor of Siliguri. “On other civilians, the discussion will be held on who will be the mayor. But in Siliguri, Gautam Deb will be the mayor because he is an Arts leader there,” Banerjee said.

He also targeted BJP for pursuing “negative politics and did not work for North Bengal people.”

In 2015, when the election of the four civil bodies was held earlier, TMC had won asansol, Biddhannagar and Chandannagar while the Alliance of Kirat Congress won the body of Civic Siliguri.

In the midst of an isolated violence incident, more than 71 percent, voting was registered in the fourth elections to four city companies on Saturday.

Bengal President of West Bengal Sukanta Majumdar said, “The election is only a joke. The true mandate of the people has not been reflected in civil polls. Everyone saw how the sound was looted by the powerful party workers. So the results of the election did not seem surprising. People know what the results are “Majumdar said.

Reacting to the election results, Senior CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “People in Bidnagar and Asansi witnessed what actually happened on the voting day. It was ‘looting’ by TMC.”
